I upgraded to the latest Apple TV 4K 64GB model and recommend it for Apple users. Users without a significant investment in Apple hardware and iTunes movies will find better values with the Roku and Amazon Fire TV or using the “smart” features built into your TV.

  • 4K support
  • Free 4K movie upgrades for selected movies if you’ve paid for the HD version. New 4K movies cost the same as HD versions
  • Supports both HRD10 and Dolby Vision HDR
  • User interface and integration with other Apple products (e.g. AirPlay)
  • App and games support. The New VUDU app provides access to my UltraViolet movie collection

  • The only 4K content the Apple TV 4K plays is iTunes
  • Expensive ($179/$199 for 32GB and 64GB respectively)
  • No support for Dolby Atmos
  • Amazon Prime Movies app isn’t available yet
I’ve owned each model of Apple TV since the first release ten years ago in 2007. I always keep an Apple TV in my work backpack for client presentations using the built in peer-to-peer AirPlay functionality (no wi-fi network required)
